when i was a kid I was really bad (or really good depending on your definition) at hidden object games. which is to say that I would not specifically search for the objects the book asked me to look for. no. that would make no sense. what i instead did was open a spreadsheet

i then proceeded to list every single object in the image in my excel spreadsheet, highlighting the objects the book asked me to find in red as i went. Then, by the end, not only had i found the objects, I had also found and categorized all of the other objects as well. This way, if anyone asked me to find any other objects in that image, i was fully prepared

how Germans celebrate their national day: oh, today is Tag der Deutschen Einheit? I completely forgot. Well, crap, all the shops are closed now. Whatever.

I will never stop repeating this story:

At the 25th anniversary of The fall of the Berlin wall, there was a ceremony at the Brandenburger Tor. People were lined up where the wall used to divide the city. They had illuminated balloons that they released one after the otther so the wall symbolically disappeared into the sky. Accompanying this was a cellist and a violinist playing a beautiful but understated insteumental version of the German national anthem.

And the tv commentators went: “Hmmmm, isn’t this maybe a little too much pathos?”

Ofc we have our patriotism here. But we don’t really celebrate our national day. Lots of people who display their nationalism get a lot of suspicious side eyes from OTHER GERMANS, our history taught us, nationalism is something to treat very carefully and it was a Key Point in Hitlers regime and everything that followed.

So yes its okay to be proud of your country and celebrate its greatness, but nationalism in Germany will always have a little bitter sweet taste to it and looking how other countries treat their own nationalism, I feel a very deep seated uneasiness, because patriotism can make you blind, to what’s going wrong
